Our 9 Day Sacred Journey itinerary combines some of Italy’s most important Christian and pilgrimage sites.

Beginning in Rome and Vatican City before continuing into Umbria and Montecassino, the route combines major basilicas, historic churches, monasteries, and religious landmarks with quieter towns and countryside drives.

Day 1: Rome Arrival & Historic Center

Day 1 description

After arriving in Rome, your private guide will meet you and transfer you into the city to begin your time in Italy. Once checked into your accommodation, head out into the historic center for an easy introduction to Rome.

Walk through some of the city’s best-known areas including Piazza Navona, the Pantheon district, and the smaller streets surrounding the historic center. Along the way, your guide will help introduce the layout and history of the city while pointing out churches, cafés, fountains, and important landmarks.

The evening is left fairly relaxed after your arrival, giving you time to settle in, enjoy dinner, and experience Rome at night.

Day 2: Vatican City & St Peter’s Basilica

Day 2 description

Today is focused on Vatican City and some of the most important religious sites in the Catholic world. Begin the morning at St Peter’s Basilica, where your guide will take you through the church and explain its history, artwork, and role within the Vatican.

Continue into the Vatican Museums, passing through long gallery halls filled with paintings, sculptures, tapestries, maps, and historic collections before reaching the Sistine Chapel.

After time inside the Vatican, spend the afternoon around St Peter’s Square and the surrounding streets before returning to your accommodation later in the day.

Day 3: Rome’s Major Basilicas

Day 3 description

Today your private guide will take you between several of Rome’s most important basilicas and Christian landmarks. Begin at St John Lateran, the official cathedral church of Rome, before continuing to the nearby Holy Staircase.

Later, continue to Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major papal basilicas in Rome and one of the most important churches in the Catholic world. Inside, you’ll see historic mosaics, chapels, and detailed ceilings before continuing with your private guide to St Paul Outside the Walls, another of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, built over the traditional burial site of St Paul. 

Throughout the day, your guide will explain the role these churches played throughout Christian history while also allowing time for quiet visits and personal reflection.

Day 4: Ancient Christian Rome & Trastevere

Day 4 description

Today focuses on some of the older Christian sites connected to the early history of Rome. Begin outside the city center along the Appian Way, where your guide will take you to visit the ancient catacombs used by early Christians.

After time exploring underground passageways and burial chambers, return toward the center of Rome and continue into Trastevere. Visit Santa Maria in Trastevere and walk through the surrounding neighborhood, known for its churches, small streets, local cafés, and quieter atmosphere compared with other parts of the city.

The rest of the afternoon stays flexible depending on your interests and energy levels.

Day 5: Rome to Assisi

Day 5 description

This morning, leave Rome behind and travel north into Umbria with your private guide in your Mercedes V-Class. The drive passes countryside, hill towns, vineyards, and smaller villages before arriving in Assisi.

After checking into your accommodation, begin exploring Assisi on foot, starting with the Basilica of St Francis. Inside, your guide will explain the history of Saint Francis while showing you the church’s frescoes, chapels, and lower basilica.

Afterward, continue walking through Assisi’s medieval streets, passing stone buildings, churches, local shops, and viewpoints overlooking the Umbrian countryside below.

Day 6: Assisi & St Clare Basilica

Day 6 description

Spend another full day in Assisi, giving you time to experience the town without needing to rush between visits. Begin at the Basilica of St Clare before continuing through quieter parts of Assisi with your guide.

Throughout the day, your private guide will take you through different parts of Assisi, including smaller churches, monastery areas, quiet side streets, and less visited corners of the town away from the main squares. There will also be time to stop for coffee, lunch, or short breaks between visits. 

The slower schedule today allows more time for walking, reflection, photography, or simply enjoying the atmosphere of Assisi itself.

Day 7: Montecassino Abbey

Day 7 description

Today your private guide will take you south toward Montecassino Abbey, one of the most important monasteries in Italy. The drive passes through the Lazio countryside before climbing uphill toward the abbey itself.

Spend time visiting the abbey church, courtyards, and museum areas while learning about both the religious history of Montecassino and its importance during World War II.

After your visit, continue back toward Rome with stops along the way for lunch and countryside views before arriving later in the evening.

Day 8: Final Day in Rome

Today is left more flexible, giving you time to revisit places in Rome that interested you most earlier in the trip. Some guests choose to spend more time around Vatican City and St Peter’s Basilica, while others prefer walking through different neighborhoods, visiting additional churches, or simply enjoying more time around the historic center with their private guide. 

Your private guide can adjust the day depending on your interests, whether you’d like more religious sites, quieter churches, local markets, or time simply walking through Rome at your own pace.

The afternoon is ideal for a final Italian meal, shopping, or revisiting favorite areas from earlier in the trip.

Depending on your flight time, enjoy a final relaxed morning in Rome before your private guide transfers you to the airport for departure.
